Jeremy M. Perkins, 28, a mentally troubled Amherst man, was ordered
Thursday to remain jailed without bail pending grand jury proceedings
in the fatal stabbing of his mother last month. After testimony from two Amherst police officers, Amherst Town Justice Mark G. Farrell found "reasonable cause" Thursday to support prosecution claims that Perkins had fatally stabbed his mother, Ellie Perkins, 54, March 13 in the family's Hopkins Road home. John R. Nuchereno, Perkins' lawyer, said he hopes that a psychiatric examination, scheduled for April 30 will convince prosecutors that Perkins lacks the mental capacity to be criminally convicted in his mother's death. Farrell ruled that police testimony on statements Perkins allegedlymade to police following the March 13 slaying justified grand juryaction. Perkins has a history of paranoid schizophrenia his family reportedly was treating with vitamins and some medical therapy.
